These questions are designed as a way to stimulate discussions about the book, and can be useful for your book club, university class, or reading group.
- What parts of the story affected you the most?
- What was unique about the various settings of the book (both in the present and in the past)? And, how did these settings enhance or detract from the story?
- What specific themes did the author emphasize throughout the novel? What do you think she is trying to get across to the reader?
- Do the characters seem real and believable? Can you relate to their predicaments?
- Which character do you most relate to?
- Which character had the most impact on you, and to what extent do they remind you of yourself or someone you know?
- How does Fran change or evolve throughout the course of the story? What events triggered her greatest changes?
- How does the father character change or evolve throughout the course of the story (as an old man, as a young man during the war, as a boy running away from his past)?
- How does the grandmother character change or evolve throughout the course of the story? What events triggered her greatest changes?
- In what ways do the events in the books reveal evidence of the author's world view?
- Did certain parts of the book make you uncomfortable? If so, why did you feel that way?
- Did this discomfort lead to a new understanding or awareness of some aspect of your life you might not have thought about before?
- How do you interpret the title, The Change Artist? How much of a Change Artist are you in your life?
- The author makes the case that artistry, both practiced and appreciated, can transform your life. How has that been true or not true in your life?
